Popularly known as ‘Queen of Melody,’ she won millions of hearts with her golden voice ever since she started her singing career till now. It is no doubt that she was a legend, but only a few of us are aware of the fact that she was a child prodigy as well. Early Life of Lata Ji
Lata Mangeshkar Ji was born on September 28, 1929, in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh, India. She was from a family with a strong musical background as her father was a musician as well as a theatre actor. At the time of birth, Lata Ji was named ‘Hema Mangeshkar,’ but later her father renamed her as ‘Lata,’ inspired by a character in his plays. She started learning music from her father and worked as an actress in his musical plays when she was just 5-years-old. But unfortunately, her father died in 1942 due to heart disease. After her father’s death, one of their close family friends took care of their family and also helped Lata Ji start her singing career.
A Former Singing Prodigy – Lata Mangeshkar Ji
As discussed above, Lata Mangeshkar Ji started taking music lessons from her father at a very young age and plays in his musical plays as well. In 1942, when Lata Ji was just 13-years-old, she recorded her first song for a Marathi movie, but that song was unfortunately never released as it was taken down from the movie. In the same year, she played a small role in another Marathi movie and recorded her second song.
After that, in 1943, Lata Ji recorded her first Hindi song and this is how her talent was shown to the world at a very early age. She moved to Mumbai in 1945 and spent most of her life there. The great singer, Lata Ji, started getting popular for her melodious voice and recorded songs in over sixty-three languages. She also received many honors, including Padma Bhushan, Bharat Ratna, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, etc, for her exceptional voice.
