Journey of The Badminton champion, PV Sindhu: From Child Prodigy to two-time Olympic medalist

“Win or Lose, I always focus on giving my 100 percent” – PV Sindhu

Born in 1995, Hyderabad, Telangana, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu or PV Sindhu is the daughter of two national-level volleyball players. Her father, PV Ramana played in the team that won the bronze medal in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. She has also received the Arjuna Award for her contribution to the sport, says the International Olympic Committee

Although her parents wanted her to play volleyball, she was inspired by the success of Pullela Gopichand – 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion. She started playing at the age of 8 under the guidance of Mehboob Ali. Later, she joined Gopichand’s badminton academy. Under his mentorship, she won several titles such as the 5th Servo All India ranking championship in the doubles category. She even won the singles title at the Ambuja Cement All India ranking (under-10 category).

PV Sindhu at Olympics

In the under-13 years’ category, she won the singles title at the Sub-juniors in Pondicherry, doubles titles at the Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament IOC All India Ranking, the Sub-Junior Nationals, and the All India Ranking in Pune. She also won the under-14 team gold medal at the 51st National State Games in India outlines the Business Standard

International career

She is the 2011 Junior Commonwealth Champion and the 2012 Asian Junior Champion. In 2014, she won bronze at the Asian Championship, BWF World Championship, and the Commonwealth Games. In 2016, she won a silver at the South Asian Games, and at the Rio Olympics, she won silver. She finished second at the 2017 and 2018 BWF World Championship, 2018 Commonwealth Games, and 2018 Asian Games. She became the 2019 BWF World Champion, according to Wikipedia

The Indian Badminton star

At her second consecutive Olympic games, PV won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, marking her and India’s first bronze at the tournament. With this victory, she became India’s first female player to win medals at two consecutive Olympic games.

While one might expect such success from the daughter of two national-level athletes, it is her own determination to the sport that has made her the player she is today. She is the recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, several world championships, and is now a two-time Olympic medalist. PV Sindhu’s spectacular journey is a symbol of pride, empowerment, and inspiration to young athletes worldwide with her display of strength, resilience, and spectacular skill.
