Armand “Mondo” Duplantis is a Swedish-American pole vaulter. Mondo was born in Louisiana, the US to a family of athletes. His father and coach, Greg, has represented the USA in the pole vault, his mother, Helena, is a former heptathlon and volleyball player from Sweden. He has two older brothers, Antoine who’s played baseball for the USA and Andreas has represented Sweden in pole vaulting, says the IOC. Mondo began pole vaulting at the age of 3 in his backyard.
He has dual citizenship of Sweden and the USA and has opted to represent Sweden in international competitions, says Wikipedia.
Duplantis set his first age-group world record at the age of 7. At 10 years old, he set the world bests for ages 11-12. By 2015 he held the world records in all age groups from age 7-12.
He represented Sweden for the first time at the 2015 World Youth Championship where he won gold and set his new personal best and the championship record. At a high school meet in 2016, he set a new age 16 world best, world indoor youth best, and national high school record. In the same year, he won bronze at the World Under-20 Championship.
In 2017, Mondo set the World Indoor Junior record and the World Junior record, and the latter became the Swedish senior record and also the American junior record. He won the gold medal at the European under-20 Championship that same year.
In 2018, he broke his own World indoor junior record twice, ranking him as world no.5 in pole vaulting. He won gold at the 2018 European Championships, 2020 World Athletics Indoor Tour (where he set the world record), Diamond League, and 2021 European Indoor Championships (where he set the championship record).
Unsurprisingly, Armand Duplantis is currently ranked World no.1 in pole vaulting, according to World Athletics.
Mondo made his Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He won a gold in the men’s pole vaulting event after clearing the height of 6.02m on his first try and came spectacularly close to beating his own World Record.
At the young age of 21, Armand Duplantis has shown brilliant skill and passion in his short and impressive career. He is an inspiration to young athletes worldwide, proving that age is just a number and hard work is the key to success.
