From the serene landscapes of Yamaguchi, Japan, gallops a dream both rare and remarkable. Hatano Reo, a young boy with an unwavering passion for horses, is on a journey to become one of the finest jockeys his country has ever seen. What began as a playful moment in an arcade has since transformed into a disciplined pursuit built on determination, heart, and a deep love for the sport of horse racing.
Reo’s story didn’t begin with a racetrack or a formal riding lesson. It began with a toy plush horse won at a local game center. That simple, joyful moment sparked a lifelong fascination. Not long after, he watched Japan’s star jockey Christophe Lemaire riding Equinox in the Japan Cup. From that instant, he knew this was his path.
With a dream born, Reo turned his focus to preparation. He began core training at home, using a balance ball to build the strength needed to one day ride professionally.
At first, it was hard. His body struggled to keep up with the ambition in his heart. But guided by his father, his first coach and greatest supporter, Reo trained every day. Bit by bit, his strength grew, as did his belief in himself. Today, his routine is built around discipline. After school, he finishes his homework and then laces up his shoes for a run. Next comes core training, wooden horse drills, and hours spent studying race footage, observing how the world’s top jockeys move, think, and win.
It’s not just exercise it’s education. It’s not just repetition it’s preparation. But Reo’s connection to horses goes far beyond the sport. For him, they are not just animals they are companions, symbols of grace and power, and the reason he wakes up eager to train each day. Whether he’s watching races or spending time at the stable, his love for horses is constant and sincere.
Though he’s just beginning his journey, Reo carries the quiet wisdom of someone older. He values good manners, warm greetings, and treating people with kindness — not just as life lessons, but as a way of living. When asked how he sees his impact, he humbly says he’s not sure yet. But he believes that if he keeps working hard, one day his journey will inspire someone else to chase their own dream.
His ultimate goal? To make history. Reo dreams of becoming the first Japanese jockey to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, one of the most prestigious horse races in the world — and to bring that victory back to Japan. It’s a big dream, but Reo is not afraid of heights. He’s already learning how to fly.
Being named a Global Child Prodigy Awardee 2025 has been a surreal and joyous moment for Reo. “It still doesn’t feel real,” he shares. “But I’m incredibly happy. I’ll use this award as motivation to aim even higher and keep pushing forward.” For Reo, this is not just recognition — it’s fuel. The race has only just begun, and his eyes are already on the finish line.
“A dream begins the moment you believe it’s possible — and becomes real the moment you refuse to give up.”
