Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu: First Indian Medalist at the Tokyo Olympics

“If something stands between you and your success, move it. Never be denied.”

– Dwayn “The Rock” Johnson

By winning the silver medal in the 49kg weightlifting category, Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian athlete to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, making the nation proud. We applaud her strength and passion that brings us this historic win which will inspire millions worldwide.

Mirabai Chanu

Early Life

Sakhom Mirabai Chanu was born in Imphal, Manipur in 1994. Her family noticed her skill early on when at age 12, she was able to carry large amounts of firewood with ease while older male members of her family struggled to pick them up.

At the young age of 20, Chanu won the silver medal in the 48kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. At the 2017 World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA, she became the first Indian weightlifter to claim a gold medal in over two decades. Just back from recuperating from an injury she suffered after the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she secured a gold; her Olympic win is even more praiseworthy – this girl knows no defeat!

Chanu’s childhood

Born into an impoverished family from a small village, the youngest of 6 siblings, overcoming defeat and injury, recipient of the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna now an Olympic silver, Mirabai Chanu is nothing short of a symbol for women empowerment and an inspiration for the nation’s youth.
