Lovlina Borgohain: The Inspirational Story of the First Sportswoman From Assam Who Won Bronze for India at the Tokyo Olympics

Born in the year 1997 in Assam, India, Lovlina Borgohain is a professional boxer. She began by kickboxing like her elder twin sisters Licha and Lima, who have competed at the national level, but did not pursue it beyond that. Her father, Tiken, is a small-scale businessman who struggled financially to support all his daughters’ ambitions. She made the switch to boxing after “realizing that the form of martial art we have been practicing is not a recognized Olympic sport.”. She took up the sport seriously after Indian boxing coach Padum Boro recognized her talent during a high school trial at the Sports Authority of India, says the IOC. 

A Bronze Career

Borgohain made her debut at the 2017 Asian Championships, where she won a bronze medal. But it was the 2018 Commonwealth Games that gave her her career’s biggest break. The controversy surrounding her selection and her impressive performance, which got her to the quarterfinals, made Borgohain the talk of the town. While she lost in the quarterfinals, she gained invaluable experience and went on to win a silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in June 2018. She followed it up with a bronze medal at the 13th International Silesian Championship held in Poland that same year. 

At the World Championships, she won bronze medals in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, she qualified for the Summer Olympics with yet another bronze medal at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, according to Wikipedia. 

Tokyo Olympics victory

At the young age of 23, Lovlina Borgohain became the first female athlete from the state of Assam to represent India at the Olympic Games. On August 4th, 2021, Lovlina won the bronze medal in the women’s boxing welterweight category at the Tokyo Olympics. She is only the third ever Indian boxer to ensure a podium finish at the Olympic Games.
