Linoy Ashram: Israel’s First Female Athlete To Ever Win an Olympic Gold Medal

22-year-old Linoy Ashram is an Israeli individual rhythmic gymnast. Ashram’s mother decided to enroll her in sports to keep her engaged as she was a hyperactive child. She began training at the young age of 7 in an after-school program in her hometown.

Competitive Career

According to the IOC, Ashram’s coach and choreographer is former national champion Ayelet Zussman whom she credits to be her prime motivation and inspiration. She began her international career at the age of 12 and 3 years later won her first medals at the 2014 European Junior Championships. At the Minsk World Cup, she took silver for Team Israel and finished 4th overall. 

Her next big victory was at the 2015 Grand Prix Final, where she won four silver and one gold medal. This made her the second-youngest Grand Prix finalist ever at the age of 17.

By the age of 20, Linoy Ashram is a four-time gold medalist at the 2017 Maccabiah Games, a two-time European Championships winner, a two-time European Games winner, and a six-time silver medalist, and a five-time bronze medalist at the World Championships. Tokyo Olympics

Ashram made her Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. At the age of 22, she won gold at the rhythmic individual all-around competition. Her golden victory is historic for multiple reasons, making her Israel’s pride. This is her’s and Israel’s first medal in rhythmic gymnastics ever. Moreover, this is Israel’s 3rd ever Olympic gold, and Ashram is the first Israeli woman to win. In addition, her victory is the first from a non-Russian athlete in rhythmic gymnastics since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
