23-year-old Neeraj Chopra from Haryana, India is a track and field athlete and a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army. He competes in the javelin throw.
Chopra began his career with the 2013 World Youth Championship. His first win came in 2016 at the South Asian Games where he placed first. He won silver at the 2016 Asian Junior Championships and became the first Indian competitor to win a junior title in athletics. In the same year, he won the World under-20 Championships and set the new world junior record at 84.48m, says Wikipedia.
In 2017, Chopra won two silver medals at the Asian Grand Prix Series and dominated the Asian Championships. Chopra has scripted history as the first Indian athlete to have won in javelin throw at both the Commonwealth Games (2018) and Asian Games (2018).
He also won the Sotteville Athletics Meet and the Savo Games in 2018. He currently holds the national record in men’s javelin throw and according to World Athletics, is ranked at world no.16.
Chopra made his Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and won gold in the men’s javelin throw event. This marks Team India’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. His gold medal makes history as he becomes the only second Indian male to win an Olympic medal in an athletics event since the 1900 Summer Olympics. Moreover, he is the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic medal in javelin throw in history.
