Life Is Not A Bed Of Roses

TIME Kid of the Year Finalist – Tyler Gordan

Tyler has faced many challenges in life, he was born deaf and had undergone surgery at such a young age of 5. The surgery gave him some hearing, but even after that, he could only speak with a stutter. Due to Vitamin D deficiency, the bones in his legs and hips were broken and he used a wheelchair for two years. He also experienced bullying in elementary school.

At an age of 10 years, after watching his mom paint, Tyler Gordan developed a passion for painting and found his artistic voice. He won first place in a school art competition and in the four years since Gordan has painted various portraits of celebrities and Black icons who inspire him.

In July 2018, he made an appearance on Steve Harvey’s famous show, “Little Big Shots”. He has received a ton of awards for his painting skills. Gordan went viral on Twitter after he uploaded a video while making a portrait of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. The post reached Harris, and she called Gordan to thank him for the beautiful portrait.

Tyler has won over his fear of public speaking with the help of various media interviews and other speaking arrangements. Every Wednesday, he hosts virtual art and painting classes on Instagram. Over 50,000 followers attend his painting classes.
