Anita Wlodarczyk Wins Third Consecutive Olympic Gold in Hammer Throw; Dubbed ‘Queen of the Hammer Throw’

Anita Włodarczyk was born in Rawicz, Poland, in 1985 and is a Polish professional hammer thrower. From the start, she was an athletic child and took an interest in track and field events such as hammer, throw, discus throw, and shot put. At the age of 16, she decided to pursue hammer throw.

‘Queen of the Hammer Throw’ for a reason

To call Wlodarczyk’s career impressive would be an understatement. Wlodarczyk debuted at the 2007 Under-23 European Championships, where she finished 9th. In 2008, she competed at the Olympic Games and came 4th, narrowly missing a bronze. She won gold at the 2008 European Winter Cup and placed 3rd at the World Athletics Final. Between 2009-2021, she has participated in a total of 17 international competitions, out of which she has won gold medals at 15.

According to World Athletics, she has won the World Championships 5 times and is also a 4-time European Championship winner. She has set the European Championships and World Championship records twice and currently holds the World Record in women’s hammer throw. 

Olympic career 

Wlodarczyk has competed in 4 consecutive Olympics since 2008. She won the women’s hammer throw event in 2012, 2016 and 2021, making her the first woman ever to win a track and field event 3 times in a row at the Olympic Games, writes the IOC. This year’s victory at the Tokyo Olympics makes her one of the most successful female track and field athletes globally and the most successful woman in hammer throwing.

On winning the gold in Tokyo, Wlodarczyk said, “I feel good. I was dreaming of becoming the queen of the hammer throw. I have been injured and came right back from it and won an Olympic medal.”. A woman of spectacular skill, determination, and resilience, she is the epitome of excellence and an inspiration to athletes worldwide.
