“Start unkown. Finish unforgettable.”
Born in 1996, Florida, Caeleb Dressel is an American professional swimmer who competes in freestyle and butterfly events. He is one of four siblings, all of whom have been competitive swimmers. He began swimming at age 4 and began competing in high school. His international career began with his participation in the 2012 US Olympic Trials where, at age 15, he was the youngest swimmer.
Career
To say Dressel’s medal record is impressive would be an understatement. At the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships, he won a total of 6 medals (1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze) and broke the 100m freestyle record. Since 2013, Dressel has won a record-breaking 15 World Championship medal becoming the only swimmer in history with 8 of his 15 medals from a single World Championship tournament. He has 5 Pan Pacific Championship medals and 9 World Swimming Championships medals, according to FINA. In addition, he currently holds the world records in the 100m butterfly (both long course and short course), 50m freestyle (short course), and 100m individual medley (short course).
He also holds the national records in 50m and 100m freestyle and in 50-meter and 100-meter butterfly (all long course). He holds the short course records in 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, the 100-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard individual medley.
2020 Tokyo Olympics victory
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Dressel went home with one gold medal in the team relay in freestyle. In 2020, Dressel went on to win not one but gold medals in all 5 events he took part in, setting two new Olympic records and one World Record. He is now a 7-time Olympic gold medallist, making him at par with other swimming legends like Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz, Kirstin Otto, and Matt Biondi, writes AP News.
Caeleb Dressel’s record-breaking victories and spectacular career are testament to his strength, dedication, determination, and inspiring story to young athletes across the globe.
