International Children’s Day was first established as the Universal Children’s Day in 1954. It is celebrated every year on November 20 to promote international awareness, togetherness among the children worldwide, and improve children’s welfare. November 20 is an important date as on November 20, 1959; the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It was also the date when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. Therefore since 1990, International Children’s Day also marks the anniversary of the date when the UN General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on children’s rights.
