Early Life of Lata Ji

Lata Mangeshkar Ji was born on September 28, 1929, in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh, India. She was from a family with a strong musical background as her father was a musician as well as a theatre actor. At the time of birth, Lata Ji was named ‘Hema Mangeshkar,’ but later her father renamed her as ‘Lata,’ inspired by a character in his plays. She started learning music from her father and worked as an actress in his musical plays when she was just 5-years-old. But unfortunately, her father died in 1942 due to heart disease. After her father’s death, one of their close family friends took care of their family and also helped Lata Ji start her singing career.
