Parimarjan Negi became the youngest Indian to win the Grandmaster norm in the year 2005. The world’s youngest International Master in Chess, Negi is an outstanding chess player. A crucial player in the Indian team, Negi with his team won a bronze medal in the Chess Olympiad, 2014.
Early Life
Born on February 9, 1993, in Uttarakhand, the chess prodigy shifted to Delhi with his family at a young age.
With his innate talents, Parimarjan Negi started playing chess before he was 5. The Amity International School, Saket, New Delhi proved to be a boon for him. The school encouraged him maintain his studies and practice harder for ambitious future in Chess.
Parimarjan Negi Career
Negi’s chess career as a professional player took pace in the year 2002. He registered for the under 10 division of Asian Youth Championship in Tehran and won the championship. To date, he has earned three Grand Master titles. In 2005, he got his first win at the Hastings International Chess Competition as a Grand Master. He won his 2nd GM title with the Parsvnath International Open Chess tournament, Delhi.
Negi managed to draw the game with chess Grandmaster Ruslan Sherbakov in Russia and took his third GM title. With this win, he became the youngest Indian Chess Grand Master. He became the 2nd youngest chess Grand Master in the world. His victory trail includes significant chess tournaments like the Politiken Cup held in Copenhagen in 2009 and 2013. Negi finished with a victory in Philadelphia International Tournament, organized in the year 2008. The first runner-up in the World Junior Chess Championship, he also won the Asian Chess Championship in the year 2012.
Notable Achievements
Negi became the proud Arjuna Award recipient for his substantial contribution to Chess. A young and brilliant player, he had achieved several milestones in his career.
Parimarjan Negi won gold medal in Asian Youth Chess Championship 2002 and Commonwealth Championship 2003, both in the under-10 category. Negi won a silver medal in Commonwealth Championship 2004 in the under-14 category. He won bronze medals in the Asian Youth Championship and World Youth Championship in the under -10 and under-12 category.
Parimarjan Negi’s illustrious career also includes gold in the National Sub-Junior Championship 2004 (under-15 category). He was also the proud recipient of gold medals in events like the National under-9 Championship and National under-11 Championship. He had also won a silver medal in the National under-7 Championship in 2000.
