On November 19, 2000, the world got its youngest surgeon, 7 years old Akrit Jaswal. Undoubtedly a gem of India, his passion for working for the great cause for the more significant benefit of people is truly remarkable and inspirational. At such a tender age, he attained many achievements while working for humanity. His devotion and endeavors to knock milestones at such a young age served as a motivation to all those older than him.
Born on April 23, 1993, at Nurpur, Himachal Pradesh, Akrit learned to walk and talk when he was only 10 months old. At the age of 2, he started reading and writing. At five, he had begun reading plays by William Shakespeare and books about medicine. His interest in surgery inflamed when the doctors in his hometown allowed him to watch and learn how to perform surgical procedures.
Akrit Jaswal performed surgery on an eight-year-old girl. Five years ago, she burnt her fingers, and due to financial constraints, her parents couldn’t pay for the surgery. Though not a qualified doctor, the family requested him to perform the surgery. He separated their daughter’s fused burnt fingers. Short videos of the surgery appeared on YouTube in 2007, and Akrit became known for this.
Sponsored and mentored by Mr B. R. Rahi, Chairman of Secondary Education in Dharamshala, Akrit joined Chandigarh College at the age of 12. According to AcchiKhabre, he is the youngest student ever accepted by an Indian University. His keenness to find a cure for cancer brought him global attention and admiration. The ‘Firecracker Films’ in 2005 investigated his story and invited him to London to perform tests. They also asked ‘Team Focus,’ an organization, to assess the intelligence of the 12-year-old boy. He was featured on The Oprah Winfrey show as ‘ the little genius.’ There were concerns raised about Akrit’s fame as a child that may actually have been harmful to him, leading to too much pressure on him as a child. Akrit denied these claims.
According to The Logical Indian‘s report on April 5, 2016, Akrit had completed his Bioengineering from IIT Kanpur.
