Five Facts About Emotions That Every Child Should Know

2 min read

Kids usually don’t know what to name the feeling they are experiencing. The different ways in which a child behaves are different emotions that they don’t know about. It might be challenging for a kid to crack the code that is emotion. That’s why it is essential for children to know what an emotion is and how does it work.

Here’s a list of Five Facts About Emotions That Every Child Should Know so that they can learn to manage them:

1. There are varieties of ways in which people express their emotions

Being a robot might be more comfortable at times as humans would be able to read one another’s emotions in that case. But, at the same time, life would not be that interesting without emotions. An amazing fact about human emotions is that different people can react in different ways to the exact situation. These reactions can be expressed by everything from body language to the words we use and our facial expressions.

Five Facts About Emotions

A simple way to make your child understand these things is to give them imaginary situations. Ask him/her what she would do if he/she will be in that situation. Record their answer and ask them to give the same problem to their friends. All of them might give different answers according to their emotional understanding.

2. People can fake their emotions.

This might be a hard lesson for every child to learn that a person who is smiling might not necessarily be happy. A friend of yours might seem to be very happy about a gift you gave her, but it doesn’t mean that she really liked it. Parents can encourage their children to understand why a friend might react this way. Wait for their answer and then tell your kid that their friend doesn’t want to disappoint them. You can also ask your children to think about situations when they might have chosen to react similarly.

The Issue of Masking Emotions

It is also equally important to make them aware of the limitations of masked emotions. If someone acts to be happy when they are not fine, they might lose an opportunity to get support from the people who do care about them.

3. The intensity of an emotion depends on what else is going on.

Emotions can sometimes build on one another, or sometimes they can cancel one another out. If someone is already having a bad day and something even worse happens, they might feel extreme frustration. But at the same time, if a person having a bad day gets a promotion, the emotion of happiness might cancel out the sadness.

4. We can experience more than one emotion at the same time.
